Five-Needle Fetid Marigold (Dyssodia pentachaeta)

Natural History

The Purple Prickly Pear Cactus is a member of the Sunflower Family. It grows to 8 inches in height and has dark green, narrow leaves with spiny tips that grow to 0.5 inches in length. The plant grows in deserts and dry slopes at elevations between 2500 - 4500 feet.
 

The foliage of the Five-Needle Fetid Marigold gives off an unpleasant odor.

Five-Needle Fetid Marigold blooms between March - September and produces bright yellow rays to 0.5 inches wide on leafless stalks that protrude above the leaves.
