Skyrocket

Natural History

The Skyrocket is a member of the Phlox Family. The plant grows to a height of 3 feet and has dark green leaves with narrow segments to 2 inches in length. The plant typically grows along roadsides and in forest openings at elevations between 5000 - 9000 feet.

A less flattering name for the Skyrocket is Skunk Flower, which can be attributed to the fact that the leaves of the plant produce a 'skunk-like' scent when bruised.

The Skyrocket blooms between May and September and produces bright red trumpet shaped flowers with 5 petals. The flowers attract hummingbirds and the plant is browsed by deer, pronghorn and livestock.
