Filaree

Natural History

The Filaree is a member of the Geranium Family. It grows to 15 inches in height and has dark green, fern like leaves with  toothed edges which grow to 4 inches in width around the base of the plant. It typically grows in flat desert areas and mesas at elevations below 7000 feet.
 

The Filaree is not native to the Southwest, it is found in southern Europe and was introduced by early Spanish settlers.

Filaree typically blooms between February - July and produces a pinkish purple flower with 5 petals to 1/4 inch in width.
