Sweet Sand Verbena (Abronia elliptica)

Natural History

Sweet Sand Verbena are a member of the Four O'clock Family. It grows to 20 inches in height and has dark green, oval to diamond shaped leaves which grow at the end of a long stalk to 2.5 inches in length. It grows in sandy, arid grasslands and in pinyon/juniper forests at elevations between 2200 - 8300 feet.
 

Sweet Sand Verbena is also known the Snowball Sand Verbena.

Sweet Sand Verbena blooms between April  - September and produces a spherical cluster to 3 inches in width of white trumpet-shaped flowers, each with five lobes. It is the only species of Verbena with white flowers.
